Engineered Hardwood Flooring Wilmington NC | Real Wood That Holds Its Shape
Engineered hardwood is real sawn wood over a cross-laminated core, and in coastal New Hanover and Brunswick counties it is frequently the correct engineering answer rather than a compromise. It goes over concrete slabs where solid wood cannot, and it survives the humidity swings of a house whose HVAC gets switched off between bookings. The core is what does the work. Layers of wood are laminated with their grain directions alternating, so the expansion of one layer is restrained by the layer above and below it. The result moves far less across its width than a solid board of the same species and width would.

Wear layer thickness is the number that decides whether you have bought a floor for twenty years or for sixty. Under about 2 mm you get one very light screen and recoat over the floor's life and no true refinish. At 4 mm and above you can sand it properly at least once, sometimes twice. We will not quote a thin wear layer for a main living area and call it equivalent to solid wood, because it is not.

What To Sort Out Beforehand
An engineered installation has its own prep sequence, especially over concrete.
- If we are going over a slab, allow time for moisture testing before install day. In-slab relative humidity probes need a period in the hole to equilibrate and cannot be rushed.
- Clear the slab of old adhesive, paint and sealer in advance where you can. Adhesive bonds to concrete, not to whatever is stuck to the concrete.
- Decide on glue-down versus floating with us before ordering, because the underlayment, the adhesive and sometimes the product itself differ between the two.
- For a floating installation, plan for transitions at every doorway. Floating floors need room to move and cannot be locked down under a threshold at both ends of a long run.
- Tell us if the room has in-floor heat. It changes the adhesive, the acclimation procedure and the maximum surface temperature the floor can be run at.
Engineered cost, honestly explained
Engineered spans an enormous price range, from thin-wear-layer product that costs less than laminate to 6 mm sawn European oak that costs more than solid domestic wood. The two hidden costs on a slab job are surface preparation and adhesive. A moisture-control urethane adhesive that doubles as a vapor retarder costs more per bucket than a basic wood adhesive and removes an entire category of future failure.
What Experience Teaches About Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Choosing engineered well comes down to four questions that a price-per-square-foot comparison will never surface.
Sawn face versus rotary peeled
A sawn wear layer is cut like lumber and looks like lumber. A rotary peeled layer is shaved off a spinning log and carries a distinctive repeating grain pattern that reads as slightly artificial. Both are real wood, but they do not look the same.
Core quality varies enormously
A dense multi-ply core with thin, uniform, void-free layers behaves very differently from a cheap core with gaps and inconsistent thickness. Voids in the core create hollow spots underfoot and weak points at fastener locations.
Floating is not automatically the right method
A floating floor is fast and forgiving of minor slab irregularity, but it sounds different underfoot and can telegraph hollow spots. Glue-down over a properly prepared slab feels and sounds much closer to solid wood.
Engineered still needs the slab tested
Being engineered does not make a floor immune to slab moisture. We still test to ASTM F2170 or ASTM F1869 before adhesive goes down, because a passing product over a failing slab is still a failed floor.
It is the honest answer for seasonal coastal homes
A house on Kure Beach or Oak Island that sits closed for weeks with the air off will swing through a wide interior humidity range. Solid wide plank in that environment is a gamble. Engineered is simply the right tool.

Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. The surface you walk on and see is sawn hardwood of the named species. What differs from solid is the construction underneath, which uses cross-laminated layers to restrain movement. It is not laminate or vinyl, which use printed images.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
That depends entirely on wear layer thickness. At 4 mm or more, yes, at least once and often twice. At 2 mm you realistically get a screen and recoat rather than a sanding. Ask for the wear layer in millimetres before you buy anything.
Why do you recommend engineered for beach houses?
Because vacation homes commonly sit unconditioned between stays, and the interior humidity swings much wider than in an occupied house. Solid wide plank responds to that by cupping. Engineered construction absorbs the same swing with far less movement.
Can engineered flooring go over a concrete slab?
Yes, and it is the standard solution for the slab-on-grade construction common in Leland and Hampstead developments. The slab still has to pass a moisture test and be ground flat, and we use a moisture-control adhesive as part of the assembly.
Do I need to be present while you install my engineered flooring?
Not for the installation itself. We do need access for the moisture testing visit beforehand, and a short walk-through with you on day one to confirm layout and transition locations.
