Room layout and dry lay
Center lines are established with a laser and the first runs are dry laid to confirm the pattern terminates well at both ends before anything is fastened.
Substrate flattening

Building the field outward
Blocks are set from the center line outward in both directions, with the alignment checked against the laser continuously rather than at the end.
Border and finishing
The perimeter border is fitted to frame the field, then the whole floor is sanded flat as one surface and finished.
Why herringbone costs what it does
The material itself is not dramatically more expensive per square foot than the same wood in plank form, although pre-cut pattern blocks carry a premium. The cost lives in labor and waste.
