Skipping a grit means the coarser scratch pattern is never fully erased, and it will show through the finish under low-angle light. Hardwood Flooring Sanding: What Actually Matters

Sanding is a technical process and these are the specific things that separate a flat floor from an expensive one that never looks right.

The first cut decides the sequence

A badly cupped or heavily coated floor may need an aggressive first pass, sometimes at an angle across the boards, to get flat. A floor in good condition needs a much gentler start. Choosing the wrong opening grit either wastes wood or fails to flatten.

Angled first passes flatten cupping

Running the first cut diagonally across the board direction removes cupped edges far more efficiently than sanding with the grain, then subsequent passes return to the board direction to remove the diagonal scratch.

Edger work needs blending

An edger cuts in small circles while the big machine cuts in straight lines. Left unblended, the perimeter takes stain differently and the boundary shows as a halo around the room. Buffing or hard-plating blends the two.

Dense species need finer final grits

Maple, hickory and exotics close their grain under an abrasive and will show swirl that oak's open grain would hide. We take these species further up the sequence.

Hand work is unavoidable in corners

No machine reaches a corner, under a toe kick or into a doorway rebate. Those areas get hand scraped and hand sanded, and skimping there produces the dark corners you see in cheap refinishes.

Why does my refinished floor have ripples across it?

That is drum chatter, caused by machine or technique problems during sanding. It is invisible on raw wood and obvious once coated. The only correction is sanding the floor again starting from a coarse grit, which is why getting it right the first time matters.

What are the swirl marks around the edges of my room?

Edger swirl. An edger cuts in circles and a drum sander cuts in lines, so unless the two are blended by buffing or hard-plating, the perimeter shows a different scratch pattern that takes stain differently.

How much wood does sanding remove?

A careful full sand removes on the order of a thirty-second of an inch. An aggressive or repeated sand removes more. Since solid 3/4 inch flooring has about a quarter inch above the tongue, careful sanding preserves many future refinishes.

Can you sand a floor without a drum sander?

For light work, a multi-disc buffer or orbital machine can be enough. For flattening a cupped floor or removing an old coating, a belt or drum machine is genuinely necessary. Orbital-only sanding of a badly cupped floor will not flatten it.

Do I need to be present while you sand my floors?

No, and most people prefer not to be. Sanding days are loud and dusty even with containment. We do want you available for the inspection before coating starts.

Sanding is priced by area but driven by condition. A floor with an old thick coating, heavy cupping or previous bad sanding needs more passes and more abrasive. Dense species like hickory and exotics eat abrasives several times faster than oak. Rooms with many corners, built-ins and closets carry more hand work per square foot than a large open room does.

Before We Arrive

Sanding is the dustiest, loudest stage of any floor job. A little preparation makes it much less disruptive.

  • Remove everything from the rooms, and from shelves and walls in adjacent rooms too. Sanding vibration travels through the structure further than people expect.
  • Point out any nail heads, staples or tack strip you know about. Hitting a fastener destroys an abrasive belt instantly and can gouge the floor.
  • Tell us about any prior finish you know of, especially old shellac, wax or paint. Wax in particular loads abrasives and changes how we approach the first cut.
  • Turn off HVAC recirculation during sanding days and leave the filter change until after. Even with containment, running the system pulls fine dust into the ductwork.
  • Plan for the floor to be off limits between sanding and coating. Footprints in a freshly sanded floor pick up oils that show through stain.
