Hardness and stability are two different properties, and hickory is a clear illustration. It resists denting brilliantly. The crawlspace conversation is the whole job with hickory. A vented crawlspace in New Hanover County pulls warm humid outside air into a cool cavity, and the underside of your subfloor becomes the coldest surface in the equation. That moisture goes somewhere, and with hickory above it, it goes into the boards unevenly, edge first. What To Sort Out Beforehand
Hickory has a prep list of its own, mostly happening below the floor rather than on it.
- Clear crawlspace access before your assessment visit. We need to get under the house with a meter and a light, and a blocked hatch means a second trip.
- Have any standing water or drainage problem in the crawlspace addressed first. Hickory over a wet crawlspace is a warranty claim waiting to happen and we will say so.
- Expect a longer acclimation window than an oak job. Hickory's moisture reading has to settle against the subfloor number, and dense stock takes its time getting there.
- Choose your grade from a full pallet photo, not a single sample board. One hickory board tells you almost nothing about what the finished floor will look like.
- If you have a large dog, mention it early. It changes our finish recommendation on hickory more than it changes the species choice.
Where hickory money goes
Hickory material generally sits a step above red oak and close to white oak depending on grade. The labor premium is real: the wood is dense, it consumes abrasives faster, and it wants more sanding stages. The variable that swings a hickory budget most is what we find under the house. We price the flooring and any recommended moisture control separately so you can see both numbers clearly.

Is hickory too hard to sand and refinish later?
No. It is harder work and it takes more abrasive, but hickory refinishes perfectly well and a solid hickory floor can be sanded several times over its life. Any contractor telling you hickory cannot be refinished is telling you they would rather not do it.
Will hickory cup in a Wilmington house?
It can, if the crawlspace is uncontrolled. Hickory moves more per point of moisture change than oak, so it is less forgiving of a wet cavity beneath it. With a sealed crawlspace and a ground vapor barrier in good condition, hickory performs fine here.
Can I get hickory in a calmer, more uniform look?
To a degree. Higher grades screen out the most extreme color swings, and a darker stain compresses the visual range considerably. You will still see more variation than an oak floor of the same grade.

What Experience Teaches About Hickory Hardwood Flooring
Hickory is a genuinely great floor for the right house. Knowing which house is the right house takes about twenty minutes with a moisture meter and a flashlight.
The color variation is the point
Hickory swings from blonde sapwood to chocolate heartwood, often within a single board. If you want a calm uniform floor, hickory is the wrong species and no amount of grade selection will fully tame it.
Engineered hickory solves the movement problem
A hickory wear layer over a cross-ply core gives you the same surface hardness and the same dramatic look with a fraction of the dimensional movement. In an unencapsulated crawlspace house, this is usually our recommendation.
It is hard on tooling and on installers
Hickory dulls blades and abrasives noticeably faster than oak, and it needs predrilling in places where oak would not. That shows up as labor, not material, in an honest quote.
Sanding hickory rewards patience
Its density means the drum wants to skate rather than cut, and the color variation hides nothing once finish goes on. We take hickory through more abrasive stages than oak for that reason.
Wide plank hickory raises the stakes
Movement scales with board width. A 7 inch solid hickory plank in a house with an uncontrolled crawlspace is the combination most likely to produce a call about cupping.
