How To Prepare For The Work
Parquet projects, especially restorations, benefit from a bit of preparation.
- If there is carpet over a suspected parquet floor, lift a corner in a closet and send us a photo. It tells us immediately whether we are looking at solid block parquet or a thin veneer product.
- Do not attempt to lift loose blocks yourself. Removing them intact takes heat and patience, and broken blocks in an out-of-production pattern are genuinely hard to replace.
- Expect a sounding survey before we quote a restoration. Tapping the whole floor to map hollow areas is the only way to price the work honestly.
- For new parquet, allow extra lead time. Panel formats are often made to order and cannot be pulled from local stock.
- Tell us about any prior water event in the room. Parquet's adhesive bond is the first thing a leak destroys and previous damage may not be visible from above.

Substrate correction

Parquet divides into a few very different jobs, and knowing which one you have changes everything about the approach.
Mid-century block parquet is worth keeping
Those 9 by 9 or 12 by 12 oak finger blocks under old carpet are usually solid wood with plenty of sandable thickness. People rip them out assuming they are cheap. They are often better wood than anything sold today at the same price.
Versailles panels are joinery, not flooring
A Versailles panel is a framed lattice assembly built as a unit. Installing them involves setting complete panels to a grid with the joints aligned, closer to fitting cabinetry than to laying a floor.
Grain direction alternates by design
In block parquet, adjacent blocks run their grain at right angles. That is what produces the shifting light-and-dark chequerboard effect, and it also means the floor expands in two directions rather than one.
Adhesive choice matters more than on plank
With no mechanical fastening, the adhesive is the entire attachment. Over concrete we use a moisture-control urethane that bonds and acts as a vapor retarder in the same layer.
Old parquet often hides bitumen
Mid-century parquet was frequently set in asphalt-based mastic. If we encounter it we handle removal appropriately rather than grinding it dry, and we will discuss it with you before proceeding.
Parquet costs, new and restored
Restoring an existing parquet floor is almost always substantially cheaper than replacing it, and the result is usually better wood than a replacement would be. New block parquet installation is priced close to a straight-lay wood floor plus the additional substrate preparation. Versailles and other panel formats sit in a different bracket entirely because each panel is a piece of joinery.

Is my old parquet floor worth saving?
Usually, yes. Mid-century solid block parquet is typically good oak with real sandable thickness, and rebonding loose blocks plus sanding costs far less than replacement. We measure thickness and sound the floor before advising either way.
Why do some of my parquet blocks feel hollow?
The adhesive under them has failed, often from a past moisture event or simply from age. Those blocks need lifting and rebonding before any sanding, because sanding a loose block just makes the eventual failure worse.
Can parquet be installed over concrete?
Yes, and it is well suited to slabs since it is glued down anyway. The slab needs moisture testing and grinding to a tight flatness tolerance, and we use a moisture-control adhesive as part of the system.
What is a Versailles panel?
A large square panel with a framed border and an internal lattice of diagonal pieces, originally developed for French chateaux. Each panel is built as a joinery unit and installed as a whole rather than piece by piece.
Do I need to be present while you install my parquet flooring?
