Hardwood Flooring Repair Wilmington NC | Diagnosis Before Price
Hardwood floor repair by Wilmington NC Hardwood Flooring starts with a diagnosis rather than a price, because the symptom you can see is almost never the problem. We repair cupping and crowning, squeaks, permanent gaps, failed and water-stained boards, pet-damaged boards, soft and springy subfloor, delaminated sheathing, joist and insect damage, failed adhesive on glued floors, and transitions that have worked loose. Your floor is a moisture gauge laid across your joists, and reading its shape tells us where to look.
With 15 years of experience and a 95% customer satisfaction rate, we arrive with Delmhorst and Wagner moisture meters and a crawl space hygrometer rather than a price list. Our team cuts out and replaces individual boards without lifting your floor, matching on species, width, cut and ring density, fixes squeaks from below through the crawl space where there is access, and puts failed sheathing and joists right before anything new goes down. We will also tell you when a repair is the wrong answer.
Hardwood Flooring Repair Wilmington NC
Wood floor repair by Wilmington NC Hardwood Flooring covers individual board replacement, cupping and crowning diagnosis, squeaky floor repair, gap filling and board splicing, subfloor repair and levelling, joist and sheathing replacement, pet stain and water stain board removal, failed adhesive and hollow-spot repair, transition and threshold refitting, and insect and rot damage remediation, across Wilmington, Ogden, Murrayville, Porters Neck, Hampstead and the beaches.
Repair here starts as a diagnosis, because the symptom you can see is usually not the problem. A wood floor is a moisture gauge laid across your joists: it reports the difference between the air above it and the air below it, and it reports that difference as shape. Reading the shape tells us where to look, which is why we arrive with Delmhorst and Wagner meters and a crawl space hygrometer rather than a price list.
Matching material is the real constraint on most repairs rather than the carpentry. Matching a floor laid in 1958 means finding the same species in the same width and the same cut, and on old heart pine it usually means reclaimed stock. Matching a discontinued prefinished range can be genuinely impossible, which is why we leave labelled offcuts with every installation we do.
- Board replacement
- Cut out and replaced individually without lifting the floor, matched on species, width, cut and where possible ring density.
- Squeaks
- Fixed from below through the crawl space where there is access, which is most Wilmington houses, with nothing disturbed above.
- Subfloor
- Delaminated sheathing, rot and insect damage replaced to match thickness, then levelled to tolerance.
- Diagnosis
- Delmhorst and Wagner meter readings plus a crawl space hygrometer check, before any price is given.
What The Damage Is Telling You

Cupping, edges high
Underside wetter than the top. Crawl space humidity, a slow leak, or a torn vapour barrier. Fix the moisture before the floor, or you pay for the sanding twice.
Crowning, centres high
Usually a cupped floor that was sanded flat too early. The floor needs to be dry and stable before anything else happens.
Gaps in winter only
Normal seasonal movement. Heated dry air shrinks the boards and they close again in summer. Filling them in February wastes the filler.
Gaps that never close
The floor was laid too wet and has dried out. Those are permanent and worth filling, or splicing with slivers of matching wood.
Squeaks
Movement between floor, subfloor and joist. Shims and construction adhesive from below, or angled fasteners from above and plugged where there is no access.
Soft or springy underfoot
Subfloor failure: delaminated sheathing, rot around plumbing, insect damage, or a joist notched for a pipe. Stop and investigate.
Black or grey staining
Water has been sitting, possibly for years. Check the dishwasher, fridge line, toilet flange and window walls. Those boards usually come out.
Hollow tapping on a glued floor
The adhesive bond has failed, usually from substrate moisture or adhesive applied to a dusty slab. Spot repair is possible if the area is contained.
Scratches and dents
Surface damage in the finish can often be spot-repaired or recoated. Dents in the wood itself sometimes steam out, depending on species.
Subfloor Repair And Levelling
This is the part of flooring work people most often discover rather than plan for, and in this region it is common enough to expect. Soft spots, springiness and localised movement come from the structure, not the floor: delaminated sheathing where it has been repeatedly wetted, rot at the perimeter or around plumbing penetrations, insect damage in a damp crawl space, or a joist that has been notched for a pipe run. None of it is fixed from the top.
Where we find it, the floor comes up locally, the structure is put right with new joists, sistered members or replacement sheathing to match thickness, and the area is levelled before new flooring goes down. Levelling tolerance depends on what is going back: ordinary strip flooring wants a reasonably flat plane, and pattern work wants considerably better, which is covered on the pattern floors page.
When Repair Stops Being The Right Answer
- More than roughly a quarter to a third of the boards in a room affected, where replacement is usually both better and cheaper
- No wear layer left above the tongue, so the repaired floor cannot be sanded to blend the new boards in
- Structural subfloor failure across a wide area rather than in spots
- Contaminated flood water, which is a different decision entirely and is covered on the water damage page
- A discontinued prefinished product where no matching board exists and the floor cannot be sanded to blend
We will tell you when you are in one of those situations rather than selling you a repair that fails within a year and takes your money twice.
Hardwood Flooring Repair Questions
My floor is cupping. Will it flatten out on its own?
Often, partly, once the moisture source is dealt with, and it can take a full season. Sanding it flat while it is still wet is the mistake that makes it permanent and leaves you with crowning instead.
Can you replace just a few boards?
Yes, routinely, without lifting the floor. The board is scored and cut back, the replacement has its tongue modified so it can drop into a closed floor, and it is glued and fastened. The limit is matching material rather than technique.
Why is there a soft spot in the middle of my floor?
Almost always the subfloor rather than the floor, and almost always moisture history. It needs opening up to see. It will not get worse quickly, but it will get worse.
Can you fix squeaks without taking the floor up?
Usually yes. Most Wilmington houses have crawl space access, which lets us shim and glue the gap between joist and subfloor from below with nothing disturbed upstairs. Lubricant remedies sold for squeaks buy you weeks, not years.
Is gap filling worth doing?
Only where the gaps are permanent rather than seasonal. On wide gaps in old heart pine, slivers of matching wood glued in look far better and last longer than mass filler, which gets crushed out when the boards expand in summer.
Can pet stains be repaired?
The boards can be replaced, which is the honest answer. Dark rings from urine penetrate the full thickness and frequently reach the subfloor, so sanding does not remove them.
How quickly can you come out?
Most repair call-outs are within the same week. Water damage is treated as urgent, so call rather than emailing if a floor is wet right now.
