Wood Species Comparison for Coastal North Carolina | Hardness, Stability and Honest Trade-offs
Hardness is the number everyone quotes and it is only half the story. A very hard wood that moves a lot with humidity is a worse coastal floor than a moderately hard wood that stays flat. This guide from Wilmington NC Hardwood Flooring sets out both properties for every species we work with, plus how each one behaves when you try to stain it.
Two properties, not one
When people compare wood species they almost always compare Janka hardness and stop. Hardness tells you how well a floor resists a dropped pan or a dog's claw. It tells you nothing about whether the floor will stay flat through a Wilmington August.
The second property is dimensional stability: how much the wood changes size for a given change in moisture content. A species with high movement will express seasonal humidity swings as cupping or gapping more visibly than a stable species will, regardless of how hard it is. In a coastal climate, stability frequently matters more than hardness.
The practical version: hardness decides how your floor looks after a party. Stability decides how it looks after a summer. Pick for both.

Janka figures are published values for the species and vary slightly between sources and individual samples. Treat them as a reliable ranking rather than a precise measurement of the board in front of you.
Exotic species, and the finishing problem
Tropical hardwoods bring extraordinary density and a finishing complication most homeowners are never warned about. Natural oils in several of these species interfere with the curing of standard finishes, and their density means very little finish penetrates. The result, if the job is done carelessly, is a floor whose finish peels in its first humid summer.

The step that prevents most exotic finish failures: a solvent wipe immediately before sealing, to lift oils that migrate to the surface after sanding, followed by a sealer chemistry rated for oily tropical timber. If a quote for an exotic floor does not mention a sealer stage, ask about it.
Choosing by room, not by house
There is no rule that one house has to be one species. Matching wood to the room's actual conditions produces a better result than picking a single compromise for the whole property.
Kitchens, entries and mudrooms
White oak. Its heartwood contains tyloses, crystalline structures that plug the pores, which is why coopers use it for liquid-tight barrels and why it belongs anywhere near water or a door to the outside. Red oak's open pores make it a poorer choice in these rooms.
High-traffic family areas
Hickory or white oak, finished matte. Sheen matters more than species for how scratched a floor looks, so this is as much a finish decision as a wood decision.
Formal rooms and bedrooms
Walnut or cherry, where softness is acceptable and the natural color is the point. Both are photosensitive and both reward planning around light exposure.
Sunrooms and rooms with large glazing
Be careful with cherry and walnut, which change color markedly under UV. Either accept and plan for the change with rug rotation, or choose a less reactive species.
Coastal rentals and seasonal homes
Engineered construction in whichever species you like the look of. The construction matters more than the species when the house is not conditioned year round.
Mixing species in one house
There is no rule against it and it often reads better than a single compromise. Running white oak through the kitchen and entry while using something softer and warmer in the bedrooms is a perfectly sensible plan. Finishing them at the same time, in the same sheen, is what makes the change of species look deliberate rather than accidental.

Common Questions
What is the Janka hardness scale?
It measures the force needed to embed a steel ball halfway into a wood sample. Higher numbers resist denting better. It says nothing about how the wood moves with humidity, how it takes stain, or how it wears, which is why it should never be the only number you look at.
What is the best wood floor for coastal North Carolina?
White oak, for most houses. It combines reasonable hardness, good dimensional behavior, naturally water-resistant heartwood thanks to its plugged pores, and it takes stain evenly. It is the default recommendation for a reason rather than a lack of imagination.
Which woods should I avoid near the coast?
None absolutely, but some need conditions they may not get. Hickory needs a controlled crawlspace. Cherry is too soft for a sandy entry. Red oak is a poor choice near a slider or in a kitchen. Each is fine in the right room in the right house.
Does a harder wood mean a more durable floor?
Only against denting. Scratch visibility depends far more on finish sheen and grain pattern, and dimensional stability depends on the species' shrinkage behavior. A hard wood under a glossy finish in a humid crawlspace house is not a durable floor.
Which species take stain best?
Open-grained ring-porous woods like oak and ash accept stain evenly with no special preparation. Closed-grain diffuse-porous woods like maple and birch blotch unless they are water-popped or conditioned first. Dense exotics barely absorb stain at all.
Can I mix species in one house?
Yes, and it is often a good idea. Running white oak through kitchens and entries and a different species in bedrooms is perfectly reasonable, and finishing them together can make the transition read as deliberate rather than accidental.
