Hardwood floor in a Wrightsville Beach NC home

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

Wrightsville Beach Hardwood Flooring | Built For Elevated Coastal Homes

Wood flooring at Wrightsville Beach by Wilmington NC Hardwood Flooring is specified for elevated construction, where the underside of your floor assembly is effectively outdoors. We install engineered hardwood, sand and refinish, run screen and recoat between lettings, replace damaged boards, assess and improve underfloor insulation and air sealing, and handle salt and storm water damage. Almost everything we specify on this island is engineered rather than solid, and we will explain exactly why before you choose.

Fifteen years of working here is long enough to know that sand does more damage than storms, and that a second home sitting empty through February with the HVAC off swings through a humidity range no floor enjoys. Our team will often tell you to spend on insulating the floor assembly and fitting a humidistat before spending anything on a harder or prettier species. We also cover Figure Eight Island, where the homeowner arranges bridge access.

Hardwood Flooring Wrightsville Beach NC

Wrightsville Beach is high-value, heavily rebuilt housing on elevated foundations, with a large share of it seasonal or rental. We provide engineered hardwood installation, dustless sanding and refinishing, screen and recoat between lettings, board replacement, subfloor and underfloor repair, and salt and storm water assessment across the island.

A house on pilings has the underside of its floor assembly exposed to outdoor air. There is no crawl space to seal and no buffer, so the underside of your floor is, for practical purposes, outdoors. Combine that with long unoccupied periods and the HVAC off or on a holding temperature, and you have the conditions that move a wood floor more than anything else in the region.

That is why almost everything we specify here is engineered rather than solid, and why we will often tell an owner to spend on insulating and air sealing the floor assembly before spending anything on upgrading the species.

What We Recommend At Wrightsville Beach

Engineered, nearly always

Cross-laminated construction restrains the movement an exposed underside drives. Solid wood here moves more than most owners will tolerate, however well it is laid.

Fix the floor assembly first

Insulating and air sealing the underside does more for stability than any upgrade to the floor itself. Spend there before you spend on a harder or prettier species.

A humidistat, not just a thermostat

A second home sitting empty through February with the system off swings through a range no floor enjoys. Controlling on humidity is the cheapest floor insurance available on this island.

Plan for sand, not storms

Quartz sand is harder than any floor finish and it does the day-to-day damage. Big mats at every door including the deck, a lower sheen, and a planned recoat cycle.

Salt never really leaves

Salt is hygroscopic, so a floor that has had surge water on it keeps drawing moisture from the air long after it reads dry. Those floors are a replacement, not a drying job.

Thick wear layer, always

If an engineered floor here is ever going to be sanded, it needs a thick sawn wear layer. A thin veneer is a single-life floor on an island that is hard on floors.

Working Around The Rental Season

  • Full sand and finish needs the house empty for the best part of a week plus cure time, which realistically means November to February
  • A screen and recoat fits a changeover window and keeps a rental floor alive for years without ever shutting the house down
  • June through August we are generally doing repairs and recoats here rather than installations
  • Parking, bridge access and delivery windows on the island are real constraints, so we plan material drops around them rather than discovering them on the day
  • Owners who book the off-season get a start date rather than a waiting list, because everyone else is trying to book the same weeks

Island Access, Deliveries And The Bridge

The practical constraints at Wrightsville Beach are as real as the technical ones, and they shape how we schedule rather than how we work.

  • The Heide Trask drawbridge opens on the hour through the season, so a material delivery timed badly costs an hour of crew time and we plan drops around it
  • Parking on the island between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a genuine constraint, so summer work is scheduled early in the day and kept to repairs and recoats
  • Many houses here are rented through an agency rather than occupied, so we work to the agency's changeover calendar and need keys and codes arranged a week ahead
  • Harbour Island and the sound side behave differently from the oceanfront. Sound-side ground floors sit closer to the water table and we meter them accordingly
  • Deck doors are the single biggest source of sand on an island floor, so we specify mats there as well as at the front door and it makes a visible difference within a season

What A Second Home Does To A Floor Between Visits

The floors that give us the most trouble on this island are not the ones that get the most use. They are the ones that sit empty.

An unoccupied house with the HVAC off, or set to a holding temperature with no humidity control, will sit at outdoor humidity for weeks. We have metered interiors above 75% relative humidity in August in houses that were perfectly dry in April. A wood floor held at that for a month will take on moisture across its width, and because the boards are restrained at the walls, the edges lift.

The fix costs very little compared with a floor. A dehumidistat that runs the system on humidity rather than temperature, set to hold below 55%, will do more for a floor on this island than any choice of species or finish. We will say so at survey whether or not it is in our interest, because a floor we lay that cups in your absence is our problem too.

Wrightsville Beach Hardwood Flooring Questions

Can I have solid wood floors in a beach house on pilings?

You can, and we will usually recommend engineered instead. With the underside open to outdoor air, solid wood moves more than most owners find acceptable. If you want solid, the underfloor needs insulating and air sealing first.

My beach house sits empty in winter. Does that matter?

It matters a great deal, and it is the commonest cause of floor problems in second homes here. A humidistat controlling on humidity rather than temperature alone is the fix, and it costs far less than a floor.

Why does my beach house floor scratch so fast?

Sand. Quartz is harder than any floor finish and it gets ground in underfoot. Mats at every door, a lower sheen so the inevitable micro-scratching reads less, and planned recoats.

When can you do a full refinish on a rental?

Realistically November through February. A full sand and finish needs the house empty for roughly a week plus cure time. In season, a screen and recoat is what fits a changeover window.

Do you cover Figure Eight Island?

Yes, though the homeowner needs to arrange bridge access in advance because the causeway is private and guarded.
